Can work permit holders study in Canada without a study permit? Learn the six-month limit, permit-expiry rules, Quebec CAQ exemption and Express Entry implications.
Can I study in Canada with a work permit?
Yes. Since September 4, 2026, eligible holders of a valid work permit can study without a separate study permit for programs lasting no more than six months. Study authorization ends sooner if the work permit expires. Rules checked against IRCC on October 9, 2026.
How long does the temporary study policy last?
The policy is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2027, and can be revoked earlier. A later policy expiry does not extend your individual work permit or authorize a course longer than six months.
What happens if my work permit expires?
This exemption depends on a valid work permit. Do not assume a pending extension alone preserves study authorization under this policy. Before enrolling, compare your course end date with your permit expiry.
Do workers in Quebec need a CAQ?
Workers eligible under this policy do not need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) for the covered studies.
Does full-time study affect CEC eligibility or CRS points?
Yes. Work performed during full-time study under this policy does not count toward Canadian Experience Class eligibility or Canadian work-experience points in the Comprehensive Ranking System.
Can I do a co-op placement?
Employer-specific permit holders may need another work permit if the placement changes their employer or occupation. Open work permit holders do not need a new permit for that reason.
A checklist before you pay tuition
- Ask the school to confirm the complete program length and its start and end dates in writing.
- Bring your permit to the discussion with the school and your consultant.
- Explain whether the course is full-time and whether you are relying on your employment for a permanent residence application.
- Identify any placement, employer change or occupation change before accepting it.
- Ask for a written plan covering the course, your work and the next immigration step.
