How to check an application-date-based estimate for an in-Canada work permit extension or PGWP, and why the estimate is not an approval deadline.
What changed?
CIC News reported on October 2, 2026 that IRCC now provides processing estimates based on the date an applicant submitted an in-Canada work permit extension or first post-graduation work permit (PGWP) application. The update followed a late-September change to the processing-times tool.
Who can use the personalized estimate?
The reported change covers in-Canada extensions, changes to existing work permit conditions and first PGWP applications. Other first work permit applications from inside Canada use the separate Work permit in Canada category.
How to check your estimated remaining wait
- Open the official IRCC processing-times tool.
- Select Temporary residence, then Work permit extension in Canada.
- Answer whether you have applied and follow the date prompts shown by the tool.
- Use the current estimate rather than an old screenshot.
Does a processing estimate guarantee a decision date?
No. IRCC says published times are neither a maximum nor a guarantee. An estimate also does not itself establish permission to work or remain in Canada.
What should I bring to a consultation?
Keep your submission confirmation, permit expiry date and any IRCC correspondence together. Those records help us discuss your next step separately from the estimated wait. If your permit is close to expiry, contact us before making employment or travel plans.
Want this applied to your own case?
General guidance only. Your circumstances decide what actually applies, and the first conversation is free.
