Consultant, lawyer, or do it yourself?

Professional help is not mandatory for Canadian immigration. Plenty of people file successfully on their own, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

When doing it yourself is reasonable

If your case is straightforward, your documents are complete and easy to obtain, you have time to read the instructions carefully, and nothing in your history is complicated, you can very likely file your own Express Entry profile. The forms are public and the guidance, while long, is clear.

When a regulated consultant is the right fit

Consultants work on the application itself: strategy, program selection, documentation and submission. That is worth paying for when the route is not obvious, when your score sits near the line and needs improving, when your work history is difficult to evidence, or when a refusal would cost you time you cannot afford to lose.

When you want a lawyer

If your matter involves inadmissibility, a criminal record, misrepresentation findings, detention, or a judicial review of a decision, that is legal territory. A good consultant will tell you when your case has crossed that line rather than take it on.

How to check anyone you are considering

• Confirm they are authorised to give immigration advice, and verify it on the regulator's public register yourself.
• Ask for the fee in writing, with a clear statement of what is and is not included.
• Treat any guarantee of approval as a reason to walk away. Nobody can promise a government decision.
• Ask what happens if you are refused, and get that answer in writing too.

Keep the answers and the written agreement for your records. If a provider avoids explaining their credentials, fees or responsibilities, resolve that before paying or sharing documents.
